Agriculture originated in the Neolithic period, approximately 9,000 years ago, with the establishment of settled communities in regions such as the Tigris–Euphrates valley and beside the Nile flood plain. Most human populations are now dependent upon it for survival. The simplest and oldest methods of farming continue to be used alongside later developments such as the use of machinery, pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and scientific methods of animal breeding and rearing. There is increasing awareness of both ecological and ethical issues arising from the intensive practices of modern farming: both traditional and modern agriculture profoundly affect the environment by disrupting the natural relationships between soil, water, and wildlife, with soil erosion and pollution being notable problems
