cosmology

cosmology
(pl. -ies)
  1. [mass noun]the science of the origin and development of the universe. Modern astronomy is dominated by the big bang theory which brings together observational astronomy and particle physics
    宇宙哲学;宇宙论
■[count noun]an account or theory of the origin of the universe
    宇宙起源说;宇宙起源论
  2. Theories of the origin of the universe belonged essentially to the realms of mythology and religion until the 20th century, when observational evidence for processes of large-scale change in the universe became available: in particular, the recognition of the true nature of galaxies as external star systems like the Milky Way, and of the expansion of the visible universe. This led to the big bang theory which dominates modern cosmology, and which brings together observational astronomy and particle physics. The rival steady state theory, which accommodated expansion within an unchanging infinite universe, has not been supported by recent discoveries
