refrigerator

refrigerator
noun
  1. an appliance or compartment which is artificially kept cool and used to store food and drink. Modern refrigerators generally make use of the cooling effect produced when a volatile liquid is forced to evaporate in a sealed system in which it can be condensed back to liquid outside the refrigerator
    冰箱;冷藏库
  2. The first mechanically operated domestic refrigerator was developed c.1880 from the cooling apparatus used by the brewing industry, powered by a small steam pump; electric refrigerators appeared in the 1920s. A modern refrigerator makes use of the cooling effect produced when a liquid is made to evaporate: the liquid (often a fluorine compound) is pumped through a valve that causes it to expand and become a vapour, which is then made to condense back to a liquid and give up its heat outside the refrigerator
