lighthouse

lighthouse
noun
  1. a tower or other structure containing a beacon light to warn or guide ships at sea
    灯塔
  2. One of the earliest was the Pharos off Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, which used a fire of burning wood, as did later lighthouses until first oil lamps and then electric lamps came into use, giving greatly increased power. The intensity of the light from modern lighthouses is increased by the use of mirrors and lenses to concentrate the light into a narrow beam, which usually sweeps round in a horizontal circle at a fixed speed so that, to ships at sea, it appears to emit a regular pattern of flashes. Nowadays lighthouses are equipped also with radio beacons, and each has a characteristic pattern of light or radio signals which enables it to be identified
